PixelRelay sends your store's events to Meta from our servers through the Conversions API, so ad blockers and browser privacy settings can't stop them. You need two things from Meta Events Manager: your Dataset ID and a Conversions API access token. There's no Facebook sign-in.
1. Copy your Dataset ID
- Open Events Manager and pick the right business in the account switcher at the top.
- Open the dataset your ad campaigns use. Meta calls pixels "datasets" now, so this is your pixel.
- Copy the Dataset ID. It's under the dataset name, and again in the dataset's Settings tab.
Got more than one dataset? Use the one your campaigns optimize for.
2. Generate an access token
- In the same dataset, open Settings.
- Scroll to Conversions API. Under Set up manually, click Generate access token.
- Copy the token right away. Meta won't show it again.
You need admin or developer access on the Meta business that owns the dataset. Without it, the Generate access token link just isn't there. If that's you, send this to whoever runs your Meta business account (or your agency):
Can you generate a Conversions API access token for our dataset (ID: ______)? In Events Manager: the dataset → Settings → Conversions API → Generate access token. It's for PixelRelay, which sends our Shopify store's events to that dataset.
3. Connect in PixelRelay
- In PixelRelay, go to Connections → Meta Pixel → Connect.
- Paste the Dataset ID into Pixel ID (numbers only) and the token into Access Token.
- Leave Test Event Code empty. (What it's for)
- Click Connect. Nothing is sent yet.
Turn off your old Meta tracking
If Shopify's Facebook & Instagram app, a GTM tag, a custom pixel or theme code still sends to the same dataset, Meta counts those sales twice. Follow Turn off old Meta tracking for the exact clicks.
Turn it on
Go to Guided setup → Switch & enable. Work through Switch over Meta, click Mark as done on each item, then click Enable Meta tracking straight away. Do it in one sitting.
Check it's working
- In PixelRelay, Guided setup shows Event status: the latest event PixelRelay sent to Meta, and when. Reports → Event log lists each event.
- In Events Manager, open your dataset → Overview, then browse your store or wait for an order. PixelRelay's events show Server as the connection method.
- Purchases show as Server only. That's expected.
- Nothing showing? Make sure the Events Manager date range includes today.
Troubleshooting
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Pixel ID must be numeric | Paste the Dataset ID (just the number), not the dataset name. |
| No Generate access token link | You need admin or developer access on the Meta business. Send the message above to whoever has it. |
| Test mode on the Meta Pixel card | Edit, tick Clear the saved test event code and resume live Meta events, Save. |
