Once PixelRelay sends to your Meta dataset, anything else sending to the same dataset makes Meta count those sales twice. Their event IDs never match PixelRelay's, so Meta can't tell it's the same sale. This page shows where to switch the old sources off.
Do it in this order
Do it in one sitting. It's the same order as Guided setup → Switch & enable:
- Connect Meta in PixelRelay, and finish the store check and plan approval if you haven't yet.
- Under Switch over Meta, turn off each old source below (or check you don't use it) and click Mark as done.
- Click Enable Meta tracking right away. Leaving both on counts sales twice, and a long gap misses sales.
- Watch Event status on the same screen for the first event, then check it shows up in Meta Events Manager.
- If the store check still finds old tracking on your storefront, remove it and click Check my store again.
Try not to switch in the middle of a big sale or campaign push.
Leave PixelRelay's own tracking alone: the PixelRelay Pixel app embed and any PixelRelay pixel in Customer events.
Facebook & Instagram app
- In Shopify admin, go to Sales channels → Facebook & Instagram → Settings.
- Scroll to Share data and click Change.
- Turn data sharing off and save. The card should then say Data sharing is off.
You only need this if the app sends to the same dataset as PixelRelay. The app stays installed for your catalog, shop and ads. More on this in Facebook & Instagram app.
Google Tag Manager
- In GTM, open your container and go to Tags.
- Find the Meta tags: Custom HTML tags with
fbq(in them, or Meta / Facebook Pixel template tags. - Open each one, click ⋮ (top right) → Pause, then Save.
- Click Submit, then Publish. Pausing only takes effect once you publish.
Using a server container too? Pause its Meta Conversions API tag and publish that container as well.
Custom pixels
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Customer events.
- Find any pixel that sends Meta events. Custom pixels and app pixels are in the same list. Not sure what one does? Click … → View details to see its code (look for
fbq). - Click … → Disconnect. A green Web badge means it's on, grey means it's off.
Disconnecting keeps the code, so you can reconnect it later. Leave any PixelRelay pixel connected.
Theme code
Only if someone pasted Meta pixel code into your theme.
- Go to Online Store → Themes. On your current theme, click … → Duplicate first, so you have a backup.
- On the current theme again, click … → Edit code.
- Open
layout/theme.liquidand search it (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) forfbq(. Also look insnippets/for files likefacebook-pixel.liquid. - Delete the Meta block, or wrap it in
{% comment %}and{% endcomment %}so it's easy to put back. Then Save.
It usually looks something like this:
<!-- Meta Pixel Code -->
<script>
!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s){ ... }(window, document, 'script',
'https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/fbevents.js');
fbq('init', '1234567890');
fbq('track', 'PageView');
</script>
Not comfortable editing code? Ask whoever added it. PixelRelay's own pixel runs from the PixelRelay Pixel app embed, not your theme code, so leave that on.
Other tracking apps
Using Elevar, Littledata, Analyzify or similar for Meta? Turn Meta off in that app, or uninstall it if Meta was all it did.
Check again
- Guided setup shows what the latest store check found on your storefront. If it still lists a Meta pixel after you've removed it, click Check my store again.
- The store check can't see custom pixels or anything sent from servers (like the Facebook & Instagram app's data sharing), so check those yourself.
- In Events Manager → your dataset → Diagnostics, warnings like Fix mismatched price and currency information for website Purchase events or Improve your rate of Meta Pixel events covered by Conversions API usually mean another source is still sending. They look back 7 days, so give them a week to clear.
Switch back
- Turn the old source back on: turn data sharing back on (Share data → Change), Unpause the GTM tags and publish, reconnect the custom pixel (Settings → Customer events → … → Connect), or put the theme code back.
- Stop PixelRelay sending to Meta: Settings → Relay → Who tracks each network? → set Meta to My existing setup (PixelRelay sends nothing).
Do both, so you don't end up with two senders, or none.
