PixelRelay reads each visitor's cookie-banner choices. If they said no, it leaves their personal details and ad IDs out of what it sends to your platforms. This is on by default and needs no setup for most stores.
Where: Settings → Privacy & consent
Check your settings
- Open Settings → Privacy & consent.
- Make sure Google Consent Mode shows Active.
- Under Your consent tool, pick the banner your store uses. If you use Shopify's own cookie banner, leave Shopify Privacy Banner (native).
- If you see "Detected on your storefront" and a note that it doesn't match your pick, change the dropdown to match.
The dropdown is a label for you and for support. It doesn't change what PixelRelay sends. PixelRelay finds your banner on its own.
Where PixelRelay gets the visitor's choice
In this order:
- Shopify's Customer Privacy settings. Shopify's own banner and most consent apps for Shopify save their choices here.
- Cookiebot, OneTrust or TrustArc, read directly from the banner.
- A custom banner, if your developer passes the choice to PixelRelay (see below).
- Nothing found. PixelRelay uses a default based on the visitor's country. Visitors in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland count as declined. Everyone else counts as accepted.
At checkout, PixelRelay can only see what your banner told Shopify. If your banner doesn't pass its choices to Shopify, checkout events and orders use the country default instead. Orders also use the country from the shipping or billing address when there's no saved choice.
What's left out when someone declines
| If the visitor declines… | PixelRelay leaves out |
|---|---|
| Marketing, or sharing their data | Email, phone, name and address |
| Marketing cookies | Ad click IDs and browser IDs (Google, Meta, TikTok, Microsoft, Snapchat, Pinterest, Reddit and LinkedIn, plus email-click IDs) |
| Analytics cookies | PixelRelay's own visitor ID and the Google Analytics client and session IDs |
Still sent: the order value, currency and products, the page address, and the visitor's IP address and browser type.
Consent for anything else on your store, such as other pixels or the Meta and Google apps, is handled by those tools, not PixelRelay.
Custom banner
If your banner isn't one PixelRelay reads, your developer can set this after the visitor makes a choice:
window.__pixelRelayConsent = {
analyticsStorage: true, // accepted analytics
adStorage: true, // accepted ad cookies
adUserData: true, // accepted sharing data with ad platforms
adPersonalization: true,
hasExplicitConsent: true, // a banner was shown and they chose
};
Turn Consent Mode off
Turning it off means PixelRelay sends full data to your platforms whatever visitors chose. Only do it if you've had legal advice that says it's OK for your situation.
- Turn off Google Consent Mode.
- Read the warning, then select I Accept Legal Responsibility — Turn Off.
The page then shows Bypassing consent since the date, with a warning banner. To go back, turn Google Consent Mode on again. It takes effect straight away.
Common issues
Events for EU visitors have less customer data. That's Consent Mode doing its job. Visitors who declined don't have their details sent.
Nothing says "Detected on your storefront". PixelRelay hasn't seen a banner on your store yet. Visit your storefront, then check again. Until it sees one, it uses the country default.
The detected tool doesn't match the one I picked. Change the dropdown to match. It doesn't affect what's sent.
