Dedicated conversion actions

PixelRelay can create fresh Google Ads conversion actions for you in one click, set up the right way for PixelRelay. Here's why that beats reusing your old ones, and what to do in Google Ads afterwards.

Why not reuse the actions you already have?

If you've used Shopify's Google & YouTube channel, your Google Ads account probably has actions like Google Shopping App Purchase or Google Shopping App Begin Checkout. Pointing PixelRelay at those causes problems you can't fix:

  • Another app owns them. Google expects that app's own tag to report them. Once it stops, you get lasting "No recent data" and "Make sure your conversion tracking tag is set up correctly" warnings.
  • The diagnostics get muddled. With two sources reporting into one action, Google's enhanced conversions diagnostics mix both, and the status keeps flipping even when nothing is wrong.
  • Google may throw away the better copy. The channel app reports each sale with its own ID. When two sources report the same sale, Google keeps one and drops the other, and it isn't always the one with the customer details.
  • The counting setting can be wrong. Some auto-created actions count One conversion per click. Google rejects part of PixelRelay's uploads on those, especially from iPhone traffic.

A dedicated action has one source: PixelRelay. The diagnostics mean something and nothing else writes to it.

Create them from the app

  1. Open Connections → Google Ads. Sign in with Google and pick your Customer ID first (Connect Google Ads).
  2. Expand Recommended: dedicated PixelRelay conversion actions and click Create actions for me.
  3. Pick your events. Purchase, Add To Cart and Begin Checkout are ticked already, which is what most stores want. Add Payment Info and View Item are optional. Search and Page View are off because those events are mostly anonymous and can lower your enhanced conversions coverage.
  4. Rename them if you like. PixelRelay - Purchase and the rest are just suggestions, so use your own naming (say SS - Purchase). If a name already exists in the account, PixelRelay tells you, so you can rename it or pick the existing action from the dropdown.
  5. Click Create selected actions. Each new action is picked in its dropdown for you.
  6. Click Done, then Connect (or Save if you're editing).

The new actions are website conversions that count Every conversion. You don't paste Google's tag code anywhere. PixelRelay's app embed and checkout tag handle the browser side.

Purchase is created as a Primary action, so Smart Bidding optimizes toward it. The funnel events are Secondary: recorded and reportable, but they don't affect bidding. That's Google's recommended setup.

Already created them once? The button moves to Re-create dedicated conversion actions at the bottom of the Google Ads form.

What to do next in Google Ads

In Google Ads, open Goals → Conversions → Summary.

  1. Make sure only PixelRelay's Purchase is Primary. Find your purchase goal and click Edit goal. Under Conversion action optimization, set your new PixelRelay Purchase action to Primary (account settings can override what PixelRelay set). Set the old purchase actions, like Google Shopping App Purchase, to Secondary, then Save.
  2. Keep the old actions. Don't remove them. As Secondary they stop counting toward bidding, but you keep their history and can switch back.
  3. Check campaigns with their own goals. If a campaign uses a custom conversion goal instead of the account defaults, add the new Purchase action to it.
  4. Give it 24–48 hours. The new actions show "No recent data" until your first conversions arrive. That's normal.

Two Primary purchase actions means double-counted sales and inflated ROAS. Also stop the Google & YouTube channel measuring the same events: see Turn off old Google Ads tracking.

About those diagnostics warnings

Google updates its diagnostics over a few days, so they won't turn green right away.

  • Low volume makes the status flip. A store with a handful of conversions a day can bounce between Good and Needs attention just from day-to-day swings. "Insufficient conversion volume" in the impact column confirms it's noise, not a setup problem.
  • Anonymous events lower coverage. Events with no customer details (like page views and searches from shoppers who aren't signed in) count against your coverage. That's why PixelRelay leaves Search and Page View off, and why server uploads for browsing events are off by default in Settings → Google Ads → Browse event uploads to Google.
  • "Tag isn't set up correctly" on Purchase or checkout actions? Check the Checkout tag row in Connections says Active.

If a warning sticks on a dedicated PixelRelay action for more than a week at healthy volume, email us. That's worth a look.
