Once PixelRelay sends your Google Ads conversions, anything else still sending the same conversions makes Google count each sale twice. This page shows where to switch the old sources off.
Do it in this order
Do it in one sitting. It's the same order as Guided setup → Switch & enable:
- Connect Google Ads in PixelRelay, and finish the store check and plan approval if you haven't yet.
- Under Switch over Google Ads, turn off each old source below (or check you don't use it) and click Mark as done.
- Click Enable Google Ads tracking right away. Leaving both on counts sales twice, and a long gap misses sales.
- Watch Event status on the same screen for the first event, then check it shows up in Google Ads (new conversions can take a few hours).
- If the store check still finds old tracking on your storefront, remove it and click Check my store again.
Try not to switch in the middle of a big sale or campaign push.
A few things to leave alone:
- Your product feed and Merchant Center. They can stay connected in Google & YouTube.
- Your old conversion actions in Google Ads. Don't remove them. Set them to Secondary instead (how), so only PixelRelay's Purchase action counts toward bidding.
- PixelRelay's own tracking: the PixelRelay Pixel app embed, the PixelRelay app pixel and the PixelRelay Checkout Tag custom pixel. PixelRelay's Google tag isn't in your theme code, so nothing you find there belongs to us.
Google & YouTube app
- In Shopify, go to Sales channels → Google & YouTube → Settings.
- Under Data sharing and tag management, expand Additional conversion measurement settings. Next to Conversion event settings, click Manage. If a Measure conversions window opens, click Manage again. (Google's help calls this Customer event settings.)
- Click the pencil next to Purchase, and next to every other event you picked a PixelRelay action for (like Add to cart or Begin checkout).
- Select Don't measure in linked account. If Add custom conversion ID/label is ticked for that event, untick it.
- Click Save. Repeat for each event, then save the settings page.
You don't need to disconnect Google Ads from the channel, and your product feed keeps syncing.
Alternative: turn the channel's Google tags off completely. If PixelRelay handles both Google Ads and GA4 and you don't need anything else from those tags, click the arrow next to Conversion measurement, pick Turn off conversion measurement and Save. Google may ask you to disconnect Google Analytics and YouTube Store first.
Google Tag Manager
- In Google Tag Manager, open your store's container and click Tags.
- Open each of these and pause it (⋮ menu at the top right → Pause → Save):
- Google Ads Conversion Tracking tags
- Google Ads User-Provided Data Event tags
- Google Tag tags whose Tag ID starts with
AW- - Google Ads Remarketing tags, if you like. PixelRelay's Google tag registers your visitors for remarketing too.
- Click Submit, then Publish. Paused tags keep running until you publish.
You can leave the Conversion Linker tag. It doesn't send conversions. Leave the GTM container itself installed too, since it may run other things.
Using a server container (server-side GTM, for example on Stape)? Pause its Google Ads conversion tags as well and publish that container.
Custom pixels
- In Shopify, go to Settings → Customer events. Custom pixels and app pixels are in the same list.
- Click … → Disconnect on any custom pixel that sends Google Ads conversions. Its code usually mentions
AW-orgtag. Disconnecting doesn't delete it.
Leave PixelRelay Checkout Tag connected. Its code starts with // PixelRelay Checkout Tag.
Theme code
- Make a backup first: Online Store → Themes, click … next to your current theme, then Duplicate.
- On the same … menu, click Edit code.
- Open
layout/theme.liquid. Click into the code and search (Ctrl+F, or Cmd+F on a Mac) forAW-andgtag(. Also look in thesnippetsfolder for files with names like google, gtag or ads.
You're looking for something like this:
<script async src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=AW-123456789"></script>
<script>
window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);}
gtag('js', new Date());
gtag('config', 'AW-123456789');
</script>
Or a conversion event like gtag('event', 'conversion', { send_to: 'AW-123456789/AbC123' }).
- Delete it, or wrap it in
{% comment %}and{% endcomment %}so it stops running. If the same block also has aG-line and you haven't moved GA4 to PixelRelay, remove only theAW-lines. - Click Save.
Found a GTM- snippet? Leave it and pause the tags inside GTM instead (see above). Not sure what a snippet does, or a developer added it? Ask them before you delete anything.
Other tracking apps
If an app like Elevar, Littledata or Analyzify sends Google Ads conversions for you, turn off Google Ads in that app. Keep the app if it does other jobs.
Check again
In Guided setup, if PixelRelay's last store check still found a Google Ads tag, click Check my store again after you've removed it. Then keep an eye on Reports → Event log and your Google Ads conversions for a day or two.
The store check can't see server-side tracking or anything inside Shopify's Customer events, so the Google & YouTube steps above still matter even if the check comes back clean.
Switch back
Changed your mind? Undo the same steps:
- Google & YouTube: click the pencil on each event, pick Select from linked account, choose the old action and Save. (Turned conversion measurement off instead? Open it again and pick Turn on conversion measurement.)
- GTM: open each tag, ⋮ → Unpause, then Submit and Publish.
- Custom pixels: in Settings → Customer events, click … → Connect on the pixel.
- Theme: publish your duplicate, or put the code back.
- PixelRelay: go to Settings → Relay → Who tracks each network? and set Google Ads to My existing setup (PixelRelay sends nothing), or disconnect it in Connections.
Do both, so you don't end up with two senders, or none.
