If a platform shows about double your real orders, two things are almost always sending the same events: PixelRelay and something you had before. The fix is to stop the old one.
Confirm it's a duplicate
Compare one order, not totals.
- Pick one order in Shopify.
- Find it in the platform's own event view: Meta Events Manager, Google Ads conversion details, GA4 DebugView or TikTok Events Manager.
- Count how many times that one purchase appears.
Two entries for one order is a duplicate. Higher totals with one entry per order is usually a difference in attribution windows, not a duplicate.
Stop the old source
For each platform with doubled numbers:
- Make sure PixelRelay is connected and its events show up in Reports → Event log.
- Turn off the old tracking. Check every place it could be coming from: the official Shopify app for that platform, Google Tag Manager, custom pixels, code in your theme, and other tracking apps.
- Place a new order and count it again.
The steps for each platform:
To undo, turn the old setting back on, or pause PixelRelay under Settings → Relay.
Or keep the old tracking
If you'd rather the old tool keeps sending, go to Settings → Relay → Who tracks each network? and set that network to My existing setup (PixelRelay sends nothing). PixelRelay stops sending for it and the other tool carries on. You don't have to uninstall anything.
That list covers Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, Microsoft Ads, Reddit, Google Ads and Google Analytics 4. For Klaviyo, use the Klaviyo guide above.
What PixelRelay does, and doesn't, do about duplicates
PixelRelay avoids double counting in these ways:
- Its own copies. It remembers orders it has already sent, so an order Shopify notifies it about twice isn't sent twice.
- Browser and server together. Where PixelRelay adds a browser tag and also sends from its servers (Meta, TikTok and similar), both copies carry the same event ID. Platforms that match on event ID can merge them.
It can't merge with anything it doesn't control:
- Another sender's events. The Shopify apps, Google Tag Manager and theme code make up their own event IDs. The platform can't tell that their purchase and PixelRelay's are the same sale.
- Google Ads. Google matches conversions on the same conversion action by order ID. By default PixelRelay sends the Shopify order ID, while the Google & YouTube app sends a different ID, so they don't match.
- GA4. GA4 can't merge browser and server copies of browsing events, so PixelRelay leaves those to the GA4 tag and doesn't send them twice. Purchases only merge when both senders use the same transaction ID, so if another tool also sends GA4 purchases, they can be counted twice.
- TikTok. TikTok only merges events with an identical event ID. The official TikTok app creates its own IDs inside Shopify, so two senders on one TikTok pixel can never merge. Give PixelRelay its own pixel. See TikTok app.
- Snapchat and Pinterest tags on your storefront. PixelRelay spots them and holds back its own copy of browsing events for that network. Purchases are still sent, so turn the old tag off. For Snapchat you can also use My existing setup.
Hydrogen and headless stores
The official apps' browser pixels can't run on a Hydrogen storefront, but their server-side sync can still send checkout and purchase events. Purchases can still double. The fix is the same: set the network to My existing setup, or turn off the app's server-side sync.
Still doubled after the change
- The change only applies to new orders. Check a fresh order, not yesterday's totals.
- Platforms can take up to a day to update their reports.
- Look for a third sender. A Tag Manager container and a theme snippet can both be live without anyone remembering either.
- Check whether the platform counts one purchase against more than one conversion action. That's a setting in the platform, not a duplicate event.
